Submission to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP)

November 3, 2022

This Rivonia Circle this afternoon sent its submission to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) in relation to the Electoral Amendment Bill that is currently being debated in the Council and opened for public participation.

The Rivonia Circle has always held the view that the Bill in its current form is unconstitutional and should it be taken for review, will not pass constitutional muster. As part of civil society, the Rivonia Circle has over the past few months participated in activities to raise awareness about the flaws in the Bill and to petition government and parliament to make the necessary changes to the Bill which would allow fair elections for independent candidates in forthcoming elections and to level the playing fields.

We hope that the NCOP will apply itself to the submission and protect the democratic rights of ordinary South Africans to elect their representatives to both the national and provincial parliaments based on a democratic constituency based system. Attached is the submission in full.
