Why The Rivonia Circle?

We derive inspiration from the courage and example set by the Rivonia Trialists who, through the worst, remained committed to their purpose of galvanising citizens to fight for freedom and the country of their dreams.
In Africa, the circle represents dialogue. We believe it is time for South Africans to come together to develop the ideas and solutions that will constitute the foundation of the new, just and inclusive society our constitution envisions.
Our Values
Social democratic values are not new to Africa. Like their Greek counterparts who, in 6th century Europe, coined the term democracy as a way to articulate the need to ensure that governance extended to all people, the Mali Kingdom through its Manden Charter of 1236 sought to create a society that recognised and actively attempted to to reduce inequality, promote human rights for all and devolve power away from the political elite and wealthy.
